The University Medical Center Mainz (UMCM) has almost 8,000 employees, making it the 2nd largest employer in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It encompasses over 50 clinics, institutes and departments, and houses two central health care centres, a pharmacy, as well as a transfusion centre. The hospital has almost 1,500 beds and treats 55,000 patients every year. Approximately 120,000 additional patients are treated every year on an outpatient basis. Together with other academic institutes, UMCM forms part of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), one of the largest universities in Germany. As of 2019, there are approximately 31,000 students from 120 nations enrolled at JGU, making it unique in the German academic landscape. The JGU has a strong research focus and regularly achieves very good positions in international rankings. Annually, about 600 PhD students complete their studies at JGU. UMCM is a leading academic centre in the field of sleep medicine and focuses on the development of comprehensive management of patients with OSA with or without comorbidities (e.g. insomnia, cardiovascular or neurologic).
