University of Eastern Finland

University of Eastern Finland (UEF) with approximately 15,500 students and 2500 staff members is one of the largest universities in Finland. The key interdisciplinary research areas of UEF are built around global challenges including ageing, lifestyles and health among others. Involved in this project are the Department of Applied Physics and the Institute of Clinical Medicine. The annual budget of the Department of Applied Physics is approximately €10 M, of which the competitive research funding is almost €6 M. At present, 10 professors work at the department. Two professorships are in medical physics and engineering and are shared with Kuopio University Hospital. The total number of staff members is approximately 100, of whom 45% hold PhD degrees and ca. ~20% are non-Finnish speakers. The research output of the Department of Applied Physics is over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and 10-15 PhD degrees annually.
